SIMPLY SUNDAYS-STYLIZED PHOTOSHOOTS WITH KIDS

Who knew that my Sunday post would turn out be some of my favorites? It all started with me wanting to share more lifestyle topics mixed in with project post...and so with that, Simply Sundays was born. My all time favorite Sunday post to date is this one right here, and right now!

SIX EASY TIPS for PLANNING STYLIZED PHOTO SHOOTS WITH KIDS

  1. On top of the list is to choose a photographer who enjoys working with children.
  2. Plan a shoot location that will provide the type and quality of lighting that you're after. Do you want the images taken inside, or outside? Are you wanting light and bright, or dark and moody photos? Or maybe something in-between? What do you want to see in the background? Nature? Cityscape? An interior?

  3. Create fresh-looking, journalistic, story-telling photos by planning activities that will keep the kids busy. That way they'll be enjoying themselves so much that they won't even notice the camera on them, and with that the images will turn out more candid and relaxed.

  4. Make sure that the activities you plan position the kids in the views you want to capture them in.

  5. Plan the kids' wardrobe so it coordinates well with the shoot location.

  6. Be sure to include close-ups and detail shots.

LET'S RECAP

1. Photographer who enjoys working with children - This was an easy one! Jaylene was perfect for the job! Not only is she a great photographer but she happens to already know my little models so they were immediately comfortable with her, and she with them.

2. Plan a shoot location that will provide the type and quality of lighting that you're after - This was an easy one too. The large windows and white paint in my studio lends itself perfectly for bright and airy images I wanted.

3. Create fresh-looking journalistic, story-telling photos by planning activities that will keep the kids busy. - Once I decided that I wanted the images to be taken in my studio, I started brainstorming about an activity I could have the girls do that would give me the type of images I was looking for. Disassembling my inspiration board turned out to be perfect!

4. Make sure that the activities you plan position the kids in the views you want to capture them in. - For instance in this photo shoot I wanted to obscure my cute helpers' faces so I planned an activity that would naturally turn their faces away from the camera, or show only profile views. If you want full face images, think of activities that would allow the photographer to capture that. One activity that comes to mind is swinging on a swing at a playground.

5. Plan the kids' wardrobe so it coordinates well with the shoot location. There's a few ways to go about this, you can match the kids' cloths to the environment like I did here, or go with a contrasting look instead.

6. Be sure to include close-ups and detail shots. - I'm a detail person so I especially love the close-ups and detailed images because of the depth and sense of story-telling they add.
