CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIZE PENDANTS - SHAKE FRONT PROJECT

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIZE PENDANTS - SHAKE FRONT PROJECT

Oh yeah!! It was like Christmas when we opened all the light fixtures that we had carefully selected for the Shake Front new build project! Not a one of them disappointed and they were all even more beautiful than we had expected!

Go here to see tips on how to create a well curated look with lighting & plumbing fixtures, and the door & cabinet hardware. For tips on choosing the right size pendants for the space and application, keep reading.

SIZING A PENDANT FOR THE ENTRY

How did I determine the size of the pendant for the entry? I added the room length to the room width and then used the sum as an approximate size for the pendant. Here’s the math.

10’-6” + 7-10” = 19”

SIZING PENDANTS FOR THE KITCHEN ISLAND

For the island I added the number of desired pendants, the number of spaces in between each pendant, and the two spaces on the end of the island. I then divided the total length of the island by that number, and the answer gave me an approximate diameter for the size of the pendants. Say what??? Here’s what it looks like as a math equation.

2 Pendants + 1 Space In Between the Two Pendants + 2 Spaces on Each End of the Island = 5

84” Island Length divided by 5 = Approximate Pendant Diameter = 16”

SIZING A PENDANT FOR THE KITCHEN NOOK

Depending on how enclosed the space is, it can be done the same way I did for the entry selection by adding the length and width of the space. It can also be based on the length and width of the table, with the pendant being at least 6” smaller than both the length and width of the table.

THE TAKE AWAY

  • These methods will make for a great jumping off point and in most situations they are pretty spot-on, but keep in mind that there is always room for tweaking things. For instance the more open and airy a fixture is the larger it can go.
  • Today’s trends call for fewer but bolder, larger lighting fixtures than what was being done just a few years ago. When in doubt go bigger, rather than smaller.

Happy designing!
