KITCHEN DESIGN-FLOOR PLAN OPTIONS-PROJECT HAVERSACK

EXISTING FLOOR PLAN

Here's the existing kitchen floor plan at Project Haversack. Though the clients were over-all happy with the original floor plan they agreed to let me explore the space to see how we could improve it before we committed to a final plan. With that said I started out conservatively and then moved on from there.  For the Before photos of the space go here.

FLOOR PLAN A

In this plan I kept the same general U-Shape as the original plan but modified the location of the refrigerator, pantry, eating counter and I added a prep sink.

FLOOR PLAN B

I eliminated one leg of the U-Shape kitchen, added a center island and included the same changes I made in Floor Plan A with the refrigerator and pantry locations, and added a prep sink.

FLOOR PLAN C

OK! I held myself back as long as I could....with this plan I got a little more aggressive with the space, and for sure it is my absolute favorite of the three! It provides a much more updated use of space and allows for beautiful symmetrical layering between the primary sink, island, pendant lights and stove top with hood.

Along with that, the plan opens up the space between the family room and kitchen, giving it more of an open, great room feel. And who doesn't want that!!

Did you notice the size and quantity of pendants shown on the plan? For a fresh, updated look I went with two over-sized pendants. This plan also allowed for a full backsplash feature and wall light. You can see it in the perspective sketch.

THE TAKE AWAY

  • Before moving forward with replacing cabinets, counter tops and flooring, be sure to take the time to explore the space to see what improvements can be made.
  • The most beautiful kitchen designs are those where the placement of features like sinks, islands and stove tops relate well to one another.
  • Look for places where you can layer or frame things like is shown in Floor Plan C. Notice how the pendant lighting is perfectly centered on the hood. For more about this go here and here.
  • In most cases multiple mini-pendants look dated in residential kitchens (unless its a very modern space). Go for two oversized pendants instead, especially for an island that centers on the stove or range wall.
