ESSENTIALS FOR STYLIZING A KITCHEN - SIMPLY SUNDAYS

ESSENTIALS FOR STYLIZING A KITCHEN - SIMPLY SUNDAYS

Happy Sunday! For this weeks' Simply Sundays, I'm sharing tips on accessorizing your kitchen in a practical and easy way. To illustrate I'll be showing some sneak peeks from the Project Haversacks' stylized kitchen photoshoot that we did just a couple of weeks ago. For the before photos of this renovation project go here and for more about this project go herehere, and here.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

My approach to a stylized shoot is the same as I do for any design project. I start by gathering concept ideas and images of things I'm considering using in the space. That way I can see things as a collection, and how they relate to one another.

GATHERING AND COLLECTING ITEMS

For stylizing a kitchen I like to start with a color scheme...this is one of the big reasons I favor white kitchens... I love the flexibility they give for accessorizing and for transitioning as styles change. After I choose the general color(s), I choose rugs that will support and add to the colors I want to use in the space.

Once the rug choice is made, artwork, dish towels and other linens are next. From there I fill-in with practical kitchen items that I already have on hand like soap & lotion pumps, cookbooks, cake stands, serving bowls, cutting boards, salt & pepper shakers, etc. Then I accent with fresh fruit, cut-greenery and flowers from the yard.

THE TAKE AWAY

  • Start with a color scheme
  • Choose a rug that will support and add to the colors you want to include in the space.
  • Select hand towels and other linens that pair well with the rug
  • Prop artwork against the backsplash to add a new texture and dimension to the space. Stretch canvases with acrylic make for the easiest clean-up should they get splashed.
  • Locate wooden accessories near areas in the kitchen where they'll be used. For instance, place salt & pepper grinders near the stove top so they're handy while cooking.
  • Soap & lotion pumps by the kitchen & prep sinks.
  • Use cake stands & bowls, etc. as decorations.
  • Accent with fresh fruit, cut-greenery and flowers from the yard.
  • Do a small grouping of cookbooks with coordinating colors on the counter top.
