MASTER BATHROOM REMODEL FOR A CUSTOM HOME

MASTER BATHROOM REMODEL FOR A CUSTOM HOME

EXISITING PLAN

Remember the master bedroom from the Angle Heights Project? We're now moving forward with plans for remodeling the master bathroom too. With this post I'm sharing the existing floor plan, the before photos, and the new floor plan options.

POORLY DESIGNED SPACE

As you can see from both the existing floor plan and the before photos, although the space is generous, it's poorly designed.

  • The most glaring problem is the toilet situation. Instead of creating a separate toilet room it is sandwiched between the shower and a side wall - completely open in the front and positioned in such a way that the reflection of the toilet is easily caught in the large mirror when you enter the space - providing little privacy.
  • Like is typical with garden tubs, it is dominating the space.
  • The sinks are pushed to the edges of the cabinet (a pet-peeve of mine), limiting lighting options and reducing the amount of ideal storage.
  • The closet with bi-pass doors feels out of place and disconnected

SPATIAL CHALLENGES

There is always spatial challenges with every remodel, unless it is a total gut and start fresh. With this project the clients gave me the go-ahead to move the plumbing as needed but to try to work with the existing windows.

GOOD DESIGN IS MORE THAN JUST PRETTY FINISHES

Yes, good design starts way before the finish materials are selected but I like to provide my clients concept boards in the early stages of the design process to help with visualization, and to see if I'm interpreting their style accurately.

JUMPING-OFF POINT

It had already been determined that navy blue would be part of the color schemes so when I started with the master bedroom design, I proposed that we incorporate some patterned marble tile in the fireplace surround. The one shown below is the one the clients decided on. Even though the tile isn't going to be used in the bathroom, It gave me a jumping-off point for selecting all the other finish materials for the bathroom since it will be used on the bedroom fireplace.

FLOOR PLAN OPTIONS

OK. Now that you have a good sense of the existing space and some of the beautiful finish materials we plan to use, take a look at the floor plan options. Which one would you choose?

THE TAKE AWAY

  • When designing bathroom sink cabinets, don't push the sinks to the edges of the cabinet. Moving them in far enough to provide a stack of drawers on each sides of the sink will provide better storage and more flexiabilty with light fixture choices. Go here to learn more about this.
  • When the space allows, always include a separate toilet room when designing master baths. And if that's not possible, tuck them in so they have some sense of privacy and aren't reflected in mirrors.
  • Designing architectural space takes skill and practice. Feeling stumped about your space? Hire a skilled interior designer that spatializes in interior architecture. They will bring their weight in gold to a project.
