HOMEWORK + CRAFT ROOM DESIGN IN THE UTAH MOUNTAINS

HOMEWORK + CRAFT ROOM DESIGN IN THE UTAH MOUNTAINS

Next up is the homework + craft room for the Mount Valley Project - a semi-custom home that will soon be built at the foot of these majestic Utah Mountains.

INSPIRATION PHOTOS

The vision for the space started with these beautiful inspiration photos that the clients shared with me.

DESIGN SKETCHES

I set to work designing the homework + craft room so it had a vibe and function similar to the inspiration photos, while working to make it unique to the clients' space and home.

The room shown in the photos has a much larger floor plan than the space alloted for this project, so incorporating the same concepts took some spatial problem solving. In addtion to desks, the clients wanted to include plenty of storage for homework & craft supplies, as well as surfaces to do them. With some finagling I was able to incorporate storage, three desks and even a couple of window seats and storage cubbies.

DESIGN CONCEPTS

For a famly that loves snow skiing in the beautiful Utah Mountains above them, it seemed only fitting to include Utah ski prints for style inspiration.

FINE TUNING THE DESIGN

After getting valuable feed back from the clients, I went back to the drawing board to find a way to increase the amount of storage. This is what I came up with, but by doing so, I had to reduce the number of desks from three to two.

THE TAKE AWAY

One of the things I like most about being a designer is the collaborative relationship that develops with my clients, as we work alongside of each other through the creative process. I welcome, and want my clients to give me feedback. In the end it needs to reflect their taste, their style, and meet their needs.

So what's the take away in this for you? First of all, I'm going to give another shameless plug about the value that a skilled designer can bring to your projects - so be sure to include them!

In order though for them to best help you, you need to give them feedback. Don't be hesitant to share your concerns, your likes and dislikes, and then trust them to execute your vision. By doing so, your project will turn out that much better.

COME BACK SOON

If you asked me what my favorite room is in the Mount Valley Project, I would have a terrible time deciding! There is so much design goodness being planned - I mean, if such care goes into the design of the homework + craft room, you know that the rest of the house is going to be outstanding too. Come back soon to see what else we've been working on.

Cheers!

Tami
